Not every leak announces itself with a puddle. Slow leaks inside walls, under floors, or underground can run for weeks before the damage shows. A few simple checks can tell you whether you may have one.
Do a Water Meter Test
Turn Everything Off
Make sure no one is using water and that appliances such as the dishwasher and washing machine are not running.
Read the Meter
Note the reading, or watch the small leak indicator on the meter.
Wait and Compare
Wait 30 to 60 minutes without using any water, then check again. If the reading has changed, water is going somewhere.
Other Signs to Watch For
- Unexplained increases in your water bill.
- Musty odors or visible mold in walls and ceilings.
- Stained, bubbling, or peeling paint and wallpaper.
- Warm spots on the floor, which can point to a hot water line leak.
- The sound of running water when everything is off.
What to Do Next
If a meter test or other signs point to a leak, call a provider. They can use acoustic listening devices and thermal imaging to locate the source with minimal opening of walls and floors.
