Spring thaws and heavy rains put sump pumps to work. Because they sit unused for long periods, it is worth testing them before the wet season.
Test Your Pump
Check Power
Make sure the pump is plugged into a working outlet.
Add Water
Slowly pour several gallons of water into the pit.
Watch It Cycle
The float should rise, the pump should start, drain the pit, and shut off.
Regular Maintenance
- Clear debris from the pit and make sure the float moves freely.
- Check that the discharge line is clear and directs water away from the foundation.
- Consider a battery backup in case of power outages during storms.
- Replace pumps that are old, noisy, or running constantly.
